Cold chain / cold storage — Logistics & warehousing
Freezers, coolers and ammonia or CO2 refrigeration.
Cold chain / cold storage is a segment of Logistics & warehousing. Below are the systems and equipment FacilityOS covers for it, filtered from the Logistics & warehousing solution.
How FacilityOS helps
- Cold rooms with temperature alarms before product is lost, dock doors and lighting.
- Fire linkage verification after every event.
- Energy by system for large distribution centers.
Systems and equipment
Core: every site of this kind has it. Common: most sites have it. Optional: depends on the site.
Refrigeration
Lose temperature and the product is lost.
| Equipment | Level | Points worth watching | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ammonia compressor | Core | Suction pressure · Discharge pressure · Slide valve (load) · Power draw | |
| Evaporative condenser | Core | Condensing pressure · Fan speed · Receiver level | |
| Refrigeration rack | Common | Suction pressure · Discharge pressure · Compressors running · Refrigerant leak level | HFC or CO2 racks. |
| Freezer room | Core | Room temp · Evaporator coil temp · Defrosting · Door left open | |
| Cooler room | Core | Room temp · Room humidity · Door left open | |
| Temperature mapping set | Optional | Coldest logger · Warmest logger · Mean kinetic temperature (MKT) | |
| Split DX / condensing unit | Common | Suction pressure · High-pressure trip |
Materials handling
The sorter is the throughput bottleneck.
| Equipment | Level | Points worth watching | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conveyor | Core | Belt speed · Cartons per hour · Jam | |
| Dock door bank | Core | Dock doors open · Trailers at doors · Door open, no trailer · Leveler fault | |
| AGV / AMR fleet | Common | Vehicles working · E-stop · Tasks queued | |
| Automated storage and retrieval (AS/RS) | Common | Availability · Crane fault | |
| Palletizer | Common | Rate · Fault | |
| Packaging / labelling line | Common | OEE | |
| Weighbridge / scale | Optional | Current weight · Load cell fault | |
| Trash compactor | Common | Fullness · Full |
Ventilation & heating
Comfort and freeze protection in big spaces.
| Equipment | Level | Points worth watching | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| HVLS fan | Common | Speed · Power draw | |
| Gas unit heater | Core | Zone temp · Gas valve | |
| Rooftop unit | Common | Zone temp · Power draw | |
| VRF outdoor unit | Common | Power · Error code | |
| Electric heater | Optional | Heating power · High limit tripped | |
| Weather station | Common | Outdoor temp · Wind speed |
Lighting
Dimming with activity.
| Equipment | Level | Points worth watching | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| High-bay LED zone | Core | Light level · Occupied · Lighting power |
Power & energy
Forklift charging and refrigeration are the big loads; rooftop PV offsets them.
| Equipment | Level | Points worth watching | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main service meter | Core | Site power · Energy today · Solar share | |
| Forklift charging room | Core | Batteries charging · Charging power · Hydrogen alarm (charging room) | |
| Rooftop solar inverter | Common | Solar output · Energy today | |
| Generator | Optional | Running · Output power · Fuel tank level · Starting battery voltage · Not in AUTO | |
| EV chargers | Optional | Charging power | |
| Power quality meter | Common | Voltage THD · Current THD · Voltage sags today · Sag / interruption event | Voltage sags are a common hidden cause of trips. |
| Automatic capacitor bank | Common | Power factor · Capacitor current, measured / rated · Resonance alarm · Switching operations today | |
| Power factor controller | Common | Power factor · Under-compensated · Over-compensated | |
| Rainwater harvesting | Optional | Cistern level · Turbidity |
Life safety Monitor only
High-piled sprinklers and ammonia leaks. Monitor only.
| Equipment | Level | Points worth watching | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fire alarm panel | Core | Fire alarm · Supervisory signal · Trouble signal | Monitor only (NFPA 72). |
| Fire pump | Common | Running · System pressure · Power phase failure | |
| Sprinkler riser | Core | Riser pressure · Waterflow alarm · Valve tamper | |
| Smoke exhaust fan | Common | Running · Damper not proven | Smoke exhaust or stair pressurization fans; monitor only. |
| Ammonia detector | Core | Ammonia level · Ammonia alarm | |
| Central emergency lighting supply (EPS) | Core | Battery fault · Days since 90-min test | |
| Pre-action / dry-pipe valve | Common | Air pressure · Valve tripped · Low air |
Security & video Monitor only
Camera and door status, and video linkage: cameras are linked to areas, devices and alarm rules; on an alarm the gateway takes an ONVIF snapshot and attaches it to the alarm, with a live-view link to the NVR/VMS. Core never contacts a camera.
| Equipment | Level | Points worth watching | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Video camera | Common | Online · Recording · Motion detected · Video analytics alarm · Tamper (blocked or moved) | Status via the VMS (Milestone, Genetec…); on an alarm the gateway takes an ONVIF snapshot and attaches it to the alarm — Core never contacts a camera. |
| Access-controlled door | Common | Door open · Door forced | |
| Intrusion alarm panel | Common | Intrusion alarm · Tamper | |
| Guard tour | Optional | Missed checkpoints · Man-down alarm |
Life-safety equipment (fire alarm, gas detection, emergency power transfer) and protection devices are monitored only. FacilityOS never sends them commands.
Standards and compliance
| Standards and compliance | Notes |
|---|---|
| IIAR 2 | Safe design of ammonia refrigeration systems. |
| IIAR 9 | Minimum safety criteria for existing ammonia refrigeration systems. |
| ASHRAE 15 | Safety standard for refrigeration systems. |
| EPA Section 608 | Refrigerant management (leak repair and records). |
| FDA FSMA Sanitary Transportation Rule | Sanitary transportation of human and animal food, including temperature control. |
| NFPA 13 | Installation of sprinkler systems, including high-piled storage. |
| OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178 | Powered industrial trucks, including battery charging areas. |
Standards are listed with what they cover; numeric values are typical figures, not requirements for every site. FacilityOS supports your compliance work; it does not certify a site.
